Combining Sentences using Relative Clauses

Hello! Today we are going to learn how to combine sentences using relative clauses. We have a list of pairs of sentences that we will join together to make them more concise and natural.

Let's look at number three. 'The doctor was sick' and 'I wanted to see the doctor'. The repeated object is 'the doctor'. Since it's a person and the object of the second sentence, we use the relative pronoun 'whom' or 'who'.

We combine them to get: 'The doctor whom I wanted to see was sick'.

Now for number four. 'The accountant was arrested' and 'The accountant works for my father's company'. Here, the accountant is the subject of both.

We can say: 'The accountant who works for my father's company was arrested'.

Number five deals with an object. 'The mobile phone can't be fixed' and 'The mobile phone is broken'.

We use 'which' or 'that' for objects. So, 'The mobile phone which is broken can't be fixed'.

Moving to number six. 'John made a copy of the photo' and 'I took the photo'.
