Step by Step Written Solution
Hi Sümeyye, let's look at how to convert these direct speech sentences into reported speech.
Reported Speech Basics
When we report what someone said, we usually move the tense back. For example, present becomes past, and terms like 'this' or 'today' change based on the new context.
| Direct | Reported |
|---|---|
| Present Simple | Past Simple |
| Present Continuous | Past Continuous |
| Will | Would |
| These | Those |
| Today | That day |
Let's start with number five. ‘These biscuits taste delicious,’ she said.
Exercise 5
Direct: "These biscuits taste delicious," she said.
First, we change 'these' to 'those'. Then, the present simple verb 'taste' becomes the past simple 'tasted'.
Reported: She said (that) those biscuits tasted delicious.
Now for number six. ‘They are working hard today,’ he said.
Exercise 6
Direct: "They are working hard today," he said.
'Are working' is present continuous, so it shifts to 'were working' in the past continuous. Also, 'today' changes to 'that day'.
Reported: He said (that) they were working hard that day.
