Turkish Red Crescent, called Türk Kızılayı in Turkish, is the largest humanitarian organization in Türkiye. As the name suggests, it is the Turkish body of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It is a nonprofit organization. It provides unconditional services and aid not only in Türkiye but also all around the world.
Founded in 1868 with the name Hilal-i Ahmer Cemiyeti (Society for Aiding the Wounded and Ailing Ottoman Soldiers), the organization has been serving since the Ottoman Empire. Ever since its foundation, it has taken on various names. It was the Ottoman Red Crescent Society in 1877, Türkiye's Red Crescent Community in 1923, and the Turkish Red Crescent Society in 1947. It was the great leader Atatürk who lent the name "KIZILAY" (Red Crescent) to the institution.
The purpose of the Turkish Red Crescent Society is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation, and lasting peace amongst all peoples. Red Crescent is the symbol of solidarity at the time of need, of equality at the time of suffering, of humanitarianism, neutrality, and peace even in the heat of war.
Ever since its operations at the Ottoman-Russian war in 1876, Red Crescent has provided aid and service to people of all nations and religions without any discrimination at all, at wars and natural disasters, such as earthquakes, avalanches, soil erosion disasters, forest fires, etc. These include mobile health services, tents, food and water, clothes, etc., which are vital to human life and survival.
The organization is also a very important official body to support Turkish health services and units. It serves as the blood bank in Türkiye since safe blood donations are made at Kızılay Blood Centers and mobile blood donation vehicles located throughout the country and directed to the needles in cooperation with official health units.
The organization is made up of general headquarters and branches. The duties and responsibilities undertaken in all levels of the organization, other than the headquarters, are honorary.
