Step by Step Written Solution
Let's work through this pharmacology question about loop diuretics. We need to identify all the side effects associated with this class of medication.
Side Effects of Loop Diuretics
Loop diuretics, like furosemide, work by inhibiting the sodium potassium chloride cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. This leads to the excretion of water and several electrolytes.
Mechanism: Inhibits sodium-potassium-chloride symport.
Since these drugs increase the excretion of fluid, they cause a decrease in blood volume. This often results in low blood pressure, which we call hypotension. So, hypotension is a correct answer.
Because sodium is excreted along with water, hypertension and hypernatremia are incorrect. In fact, hyponatremia is more common.
Incorrect Options:
- Hypertension (it lowers BP)
- Hypernatremia (it lowers sodium)
