Step by Step Written Solution
In this lesson, we will fill in the blanks with the correct participle forms for seven different sentences. We need to decide between active and passive participles for each one.
Part II: Participles (Active vs. Passive)
For the first sentence, he is the one performing the action of cleaning the car. Since the subject is active, we use the present participle ending in i n g.
1. Cleaning (clean) his car, he found a note on the seat.
In sentence two, the article does not copy itself; it is the receiver of the action. Therefore, we need a passive form. We use 'being' plus the past participle 'copied'.
2. Before being copied (copy), the article was checked several times.
Sentence three describes a man who is currently working. This is an active state, so we use the present participle, 'working'.
3. The man working (work) with my father is a famous scientist.
Moving to sentence four, people were told something by someone else. This is a passive action that happened in the past, so we use the past participle 'told'.
4. They were frightened when told (tell) to raise their hands.
