Label the Rock Cycle Diagram
Published:
Use the words below to label the types of rock and materials in the rock cycle. Hint: During crystallization, liquid rock cools and hardens to form solid rock. Options: sedimentary rock, sediment, magma, metamorphic rock, igneous rock.
This question includes visual content: A diagram of the rock cycle showing interactions between crustal layers and geological processes. It features five blank rectangular labels pointing to different stages in the cycle. Geological processes are labeled as follows: 'weathering and erosion', 'lithification', 'metamorphism', 'melting', and 'crystallization'. The image includes illustrations of mountains, volcanoes, sedimentary layers, and a molten magma chamber at the bottom.

Step by Step Written Solution
Hi Acacia, let's work through the rock cycle together to identify these five different components.
The Rock Cycle
Let's start at the top right, where we see mountains being broken down by weathering and erosion. Small pieces of rock called sediment are produced. So, the right-most box at the top should be sediment.
Now, look at the process of lithification on the left. This is where sediment is compacted and cemented into layers. These layers form sedimentary rock. Therefore, the top left box is sedimentary rock.
Next, follow the arrows labelled metamorphism. When rock is buried deep underground and subjected to high heat and pressure, it turns into metamorphic rock. This corresponds to the box at the bottom left.
