Step by Step Written Solution
In this lesson, we will solve several key word transformation exercises focused on phrasal verbs. We need to rewrite the sentences using the provided key word so that the meaning remains the same.
Phrasal Verbs: Key Word Transformation
Let's look at the first example which is already completed for us. The phrase find by any chance is replaced with the phrasal verb come upon. So, did you find my passport becomes, did you come upon my passport.
1. find by chance $\rightarrow$ come upon
Now for the second problem. He fainted when he saw all the blood. We must use the word out. The phrasal verb meaning to faint is pass out.
Question 2
Original: He fainted when he saw all the blood.
Key word: (out)
In the target sentence, we see the phrase sight of. The phrasal verb passed out occurs when someone faints. To connect it to sight of, we say passed out at the sight of. Let's fill that in.
The third question says, a bright light was directed towards the empty stage. We need to use the word fell.
Question 3
Original: A bright light was directed towards the empty stage.
Key word: (fell)
When light is directed onto something, we can say it fell upon or fell on it. Since the subject is a bright light, the target sentence is a bright light fell on or fell upon the empty stage.
In the fourth question, we thought she was the star of the show but she wasn't. The key word is her.
Question 4
Original: We thought she was the star... but she wasn't.
Key word: (her)
