Opinion Thread: What’s a good age to give your kids a phone?

Chetan K. Posted June 8th 2016 3:31 AM: There should be no "set" age per se - but a range of ages. You must be mature enough to understand what happens, the dangers, the risks, but the benefits and advantages too.

Murphy Barret Posted October 8th 2018 4:13 AM: Whatever age they learn to drive. If the kids are going out on their own. I want them to be able to call me or emergency services if necessary. But that’s the earliest. I would consider getting them a phone.

Abigail Fox Posted March 5th 2017 8:57 AM: Very much depends on the kid's personality and the independence they have. When you start to give your kid independence, you need to start thinking about how to best equip them so that they can be independent and safe at the same time. If they ever ride the subway alone, are home alone without a home phone, might need to contact you or someone else for rides, or spend the night away from home dan outside their own city. I would recommend getting them a phone of some type.

John Mitchell Posted September 25th 2018 5:29 AM: I received my first cellphone at the age of 10. It’s quite easy to set up parental controls on phones, but it all depends on how mature your child is. Keep in mind that kids are sneaky and they can hide things easily from you, so you just have to trust.

Louise Sackville Posted April 9th 2018: I personally think that even a younger child, say age six / a first-grader, should be able to contact you easily in an emergency situation, so I would give a 6-years-old a simple cellphone, not a smart phone that is connected to the internet.

Jeff Obunga Posted June 7th 2018 12:25 AM: Don't go off society's general view, rather whenever you feel your children are mature enough to own one, taking responsibility for what they access and how long they spend on it.
