Identifying Clause Types in Sentences

In this exercise, we need to identify the function of the dependent clauses in each of these sentences. We'll look at whether they act as nouns, adjectives, or other parts of speech.

Let's look at sentence seven. I lost the watch that you bought. The clause that you bought describes the watch. Since it modifies a noun, it is an adjective clause.

Number eight. That Tom lost the watch upset him a lot. The clause starting with that acts as the subject of the verb upset. Therefore, it is a noun clause.

Sentence nine says: It is clear she is not willing to quit her job. The clause she is not willing to quit her job explains what is clear. This is a noun clause acting as an appositive to the dummy subject it.

In sentence ten, the clause for whom I will vote in the coming election follows the adjective undecided and serves as the object of the preposition. This is a noun clause.
