Adverse effects of Desmopressin

In this pharmacology question, we are asked to identify a side effect of desmopressin when administered to a pediatric client with diabetes insipidus.

Desmopressin is a synthetic form of antidiuretic hormone, or A D H. Its primary function is to help the kidneys reabsorb water back into the bloodstream.

In diabetes insipidus, the body lacks A D H, leading to excessive urination and dehydration. Desmopressin corrects this by reducing urine output.

However, if the body retains too much water, it can lead to a condition called water intoxication.

When excessive water is retained in the vascular space, it dilutes the concentration of electrolytes in the blood, particularly sodium.

This drop in serum sodium levels is known as hyponatremia. This is a critical side effect to monitor for, as it can lead to seizures or coma, especially in pediatric patients.
